After years of living in your home, you may find yourself running into problems arising from wear and tear. Or even on an individual level, how do you keep your personal belongings constantly clean and refreshed apart from throwing them into the washing machine?
Here are some handy tips that will help you (or maybe even your mum) ease the workload at home.
Create a multi-purpose cleaner for your house
Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar and baking soda in warm water, then use this concoction to wipe the surface of kitchen countertops, electrical appliances and refrigerators with a sponge. It is all you need to do to brighten your things up!
Silence your wood floor
Hate the noise of your squeaky floors? It doesn’t have to drive you crazy. Sprinkle a generous amount of baby powder directly over your wood floors and sweep it with a cloth or towel. Walk on the floor to make sure there is no excess and the enjoy the silenced floor!
Remove years of furniture grit and grime
Dishwashing detergent washes off grease and foods stuck to dishes, but it can also be a great help to de-grime your furniture. Add a few drops of dish detergent in warm water and use a sponge to wipe down your tables and chairs. Remember to wipe the soap off thoroughly and not leaving any soap residue as it can cause a build-up of grime.
Polish furniture with nuts
Nuts are a good source of dietary fibre and provide a wide range of essential nutrients. You can also rub walnuts, pecans, almonds and brazil nuts against your wooden furniture to mask a damage. How it works is that when the nut wears down, the wood will absorb oils from the nut, and this will fill in the light dents and colour the wood brown. This method is cheap, easy and very efficient.
Rust removal with Coca-Cola
For most of us, when we eat fast food or greasy foods, our first choice when it comes to beverage would be a cup or can of Cola.
Did you know that you can strip rust from nuts, bolts and tools using the same drink? A couple of cans of Coke will do the magic. Apply some on the surface and scrub with a brush to eliminate stubborn rust stains. After which, rinse with warm water and wipe off any residual rust with a wet cloth.
A smart solution for fan cleaning
We should be cleaning our fans regularly, and not just during Chinese New Year (or prior to any other holiday) period. After working hard all year round, the top of the fan blades tend to collect thick layers of dust. For the most efficient way of clearing up the dust, slide a pillowcase over each blade and slowly draw the pillowcase back. You will find that the dust and dirt will be collected in the case without making a mess.
Best pet odour Eliminator
Love your fur kids but not the smell they emit? Sprinkle on baking soda at the areas that your dogs love to hang around at, including sofas, chairs and the dog’s bed. Leave it for 15 minutes, then use your favourite vacuum to clean it up after that. You will find the odour dissipating after.
Magic rubber gloves to remove fur
If you are a dog owner, surely you know that the fur they shed gets stuck everywhere. Emulate a lint roller and pick up all of the fur at one go by wiping a damp rubber glove over the surface. This will help to pick up all of the stray fur, and they will no longer be on your favourite chair and sofa anymore.
Get rid of greedy ants
Ants are a bane of our existence; they are extremely annoying and we can’t seem to eliminate all of them from our homes. Simply mix a combination of lemon, vinegar and water, and spray it wherever you see ants. Wipe down with a paper towel or mop it away after the mess – it doesn’t get simpler than this!
Plus, it’s all organic so it is safe to use it around your kids and pets without worrying.
Make your sneakers look new again
Spent a few hundred dollars on those Adidas and Nike sneakers, but they look dirty after just a few wears? It’s time to make them pristine again! Simply scrub the sole with toothpaste and in no time, they will look as though they were fresh out of the box. Other than toothpaste, melamine sponge makes a great alternative too!
Funky foot smell
Stinky shoes after coming home from your gym session? Tap some baking soda and put it inside your shoes, and they will smell good the next time when you wear them again.
